How To Write Like Joan Didion

Happy New Year, writer friends, and I do hope life is getting back to something approaching normal for you.

For students of The Complete Freelance Writing Course here’s a new ingredient: a podcast, Write Up Close, where I take a close look at tips and insights from great writers. The full version, which is about 20 minutes, is now on the course curriculum, and it contains helpful practice activities to go with every attribute described. It’s in Lecture 22, on Using Role Models , as a downloadable resource. For those of you not on the course, I’ll keep you posted as to when these podcasts will be widely available.

Here are a couple of useful links for writers to start the new year, both from newsletters that I love. The first one comes from Janel’s Brain Pint newsletter – and be warned if you’re a copywriting fan, you may lose some hours here. It’s on the world’s best copywriting examples.

And the second is fun suggestion from Dan Mason, who creates the Useful Stuff For Storytellers newsletter, and may help those of you who feel you should have a website, but aren’t quite sure…This papewebsite platform lets you create a website from your notebook, when you photograph your scribblings from it. Maybe a good idea to test for a few months… if you don’t want a bigger commitment.

Finally, as this is the time of year for visions, goals and plans here’s a post I wrote a couple of years ago, on how to write more in 2020

I hope you’ve got plans for writing projects this year, and as ever, please send me updates or ask me any questions which occur. May the word spirits bless you and carry you forward in 2022!
